Public relations is still one of the most effective ways to communicate to various audiences and foster a positive feeling with the consumer and news media.
The problem is, many companies today are still practicing the tactics of yesterday instead of taking into account the status of the present and following trends of the future. If you are behind the times in regards to your PR strategies, you will ultimately fall behind your competition.
Let’s take a look at 3 outdated PR strategies you should stop doing immediately.
#1 – Focusing only on print media
Let’s face it. Print media isn’t what it used to be. Newspapers are dissolving left and right and the shift has already been made to digital. You can craft the perfect news release and send it out and chances are there is a better option than a front page write up in the local Tribune. In reality, print media is a dying breed. Your PR efforts can be better spent elsewhere. Social media outlets will provide a much larger ROI.
#2 – Using old-fashioned media kits
It used to be common practice to PR folks to send out elaborate media kits to news sources in the attempt to get their product or service recognized and talked about. With the digital shift, media kits have also been revamped. EPKs, or electronic press kits, are the best way to get your information in front of the right person. They are quick, concise and digital.
*EPK Tip — Don’t send out new product information in an EPK. This should still be done through traditional advertising. EPKs are great for important announcements and events.
#3 – Doing your own PR
The majority of small to medium sized companies house advertising, PR and events under a global “Marketing” department. This really isn’t the best way to do things, as there are some pretty significant differences in the group. The better option is to outsource PR to a professional with the industry experience to get it done right.
